Listed Buildings and Historic Restoration

Being based in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, we carry out work on many properties that are subject to Listed Building Consent, or that are within a designated conservation area. Alterations or refurbishments to properties in these areas may require using traditional building and construction methods in order to satisfy planning conditions put in place by the local planning authority.

Many modern building methods, and especially those associated with damp prevention, simply are not compatible with historic buildings of solid stone or brick construction, and can eventually lead to a return of the issues they were intended to solve.  Examples of this are cement pointing and rendering, and modern gypsum plastering.

Prior to carrying out work on your listed building, it is imperative to speak to your local planning authority and gain consent for any work you have in mind, and if you need advice on what may or may not be suitable, then call us and we can help with the process.

Lime pointing

Cement pointing on stone properties will eventually destroy your stone, and can lead to damp walls.  This can be avoided by using a hot mix lime mortar for repointing, rather than an NHL mortar or cement.

Lime plastering

To prevent damp issues internally, hot mix lime plaster is the traditional solution, and the most beneficial in historic properties.  If you are experiencing damp problems, speak to us to see how we can help.

Joinery

Listed buildings often need sympathetic restoration, where historic timbers, staircases and windows need to be preserved where possible.  Our experience will mean that your home is refurbished to a high standard, while retaining these characterful features.

eco-friendly

Restoration of historic buildings allows us to follow a very Eco friendly approach; lime plastering is a carbon negative process, and materials such as hemp insulation or sheep's wool are kinder to the planet than glass wool or PIR insulation for example.
